Bum Language History
The Bum New Testament (titled Ŋwàklù Fùyèn Kàn Mù Fê in the Bum language) was officially published in 2014 by the Cameroon Association for Bible Translation and Literacy (CABTAL) in cooperation with Wycliffe Bible Translators, Inc.
Key Milestones in the Bum Translation Project
- Language Community: The Bum language (ISO code bmv, also referred to as Bom or Bûmì) is spoken by roughly 51000 people primarily in the Bum Subdivision of the Boyo Division in the North-West Region of Cameroon.
- Linguistic Foundation & Orthography: Before Scripture translation could begin, foundational work was required to analyze the language and develop a written system. In September 2005, CABTAL published a proposed Bum orthography statement, followed in 2008 by a mother-tongue primer booklet (Yikî hi taŋ nì hi nyàk ijisì Bûmì) authored by Emmanuel Keyeh to help locals learn to read and write in Bum.
- New Testament Completion (2014): The full New Testament translation was finalized and released in 2014.
- Audio and Digital Integration: Following the print release, digital access expanded significantly. An audio version of the Bum New Testament—recorded in partnership with Faith Comes By Hearing and Hosanna—was released and integrated into platforms like the YouVersion Bible App and the Global Recordings Network.
